Today at the Diamond in Clones, members of the community gathered for Mobile Made Easy – Community Training Day, an intergenerational digital learning event organised by Dora McElwain from Enterprising Monaghan. The initiative brought together local businesses and students from Largey College to create a welcoming space where people could build confidence using everyday mobile technology.
Transition Year (TY) students played a key role in the session, working one-to-one with older members of the community to demonstrate simple but essential mobile phone skills. Participants explored how to make calls, send messages, download and use apps and stay connected with family, friends and important local services. The relaxed, supportive atmosphere allowed learners to ask questions freely while benefiting from the patience and enthusiasm of the student mentors.
The afternoon also featured an Technology Showcase in the Mobile Digital Lab, inviting the wider community and schools to drop in and explore a range of digital technologies. Visitors had the opportunity to try virtual reality headsets and discover other digital tools designed to encourage curiosity, creativity and informal learning.
Feedback and observations from the day will help identify the technologies and digital supports that are most useful for the community. These insights will guide future activities and help shape how the MinidigiHub in Clones at the old Bank Of Ireland building could be fitted out with the latest high tech in future.
Thanks to Dora and all of the Enterprising Monaghan Team for a warm welcome and special thanks to everyone – young and older – who experienced all of the new technology in our mobile digital lab today.
